When the Contents of the Senior’s Refrigerator Could Indicate It’s Time for Home Care

Home Care La Jolla CAWhen was the last time you looked at all of the contents of your refrigerator? Unless you’re a super organized person, life can have a tendency to get in the way and complicate taking care of certain tasks. Within most refrigerators throughout the United States there is likely at least one item (and more often than not many more) that have been expired for some time. Whether it’s a salad dressing, a package of hot dogs, cold cuts, or even a vegetable or some type of fruit, these food items can be potentially harmful to one’s health once they have gone bad.

When you’re talking about an elderly loved one, it can be a challenge to try to figure out whether or not it’s time to consider professional home care services. After all, the last thing you want is to put your elderly mother or father in an uncomfortable situation by discussing home care when it’s not really necessary.

It can also be difficult to convince somebody that home care is necessary at this time without having specifics to explain how you came to this conclusion.

One thing that can provide a great deal of insight and information about the senior’s ability take care of himself or herself can be found in the refrigerator.

The next time you visit your elderly loved one, ask if they wouldn’t mind you going through their refrigerator, just to make sure they had enough food and everything is fine. If they are resistant, you need to respect their wishes, but if you continue to have certain concerns, you may need to discuss this as a family with siblings and other loved ones.

If the senior has a lot of leftovers that have gone bad, food that has grown a significant amount of mold on it, or many expired items, especially things they may use on a regular basis and may even have recently used, such as mayonnaise, it’s time to discuss the reasons why they still have these items in the refrigerator.

A few items that have gone bad may simply be a matter of forgetfulness, which can happen to people of all ages. It could also be a product of the senior not even taking time to pay attention to these things.

When you look in the refrigerator, you can usually tell a lot about a person’s state of mind and their ability to take care of themselves in a healthy and safe manner. If you notice that has been compromised, you should have a frank and honest discussion about home care services.
