Duties and Responsibilities of Respite Caregivers:

Personal Hygiene:

  • Assist patient with personal care and activities of daily living, safety supervision
  • Bathing, shaving, hair care, and routine skincare
  • Oral hygiene including denture care 
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Prevention of pressure ulcers
  • Apply non-sterile, dry dressings to intact skin surfaces
  • Empty or change the Foley catheter bag
  • Empty or change Colostomy bag 
  • Care of hearing aides, glasses, and prosthetic devices
  • Nail care (filing ok, but no cutting nails)

Medical Care:

  • Obtain and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, and respirations
  • Remind or assist with pre-poured medications
  • Chart the medical record


  • Home safety, emergency preparedness, CPR, and basic first aid.


  • Light housekeeping, maintaining a clean and healthy environment


  •  May drive/escort on errands, shopping, doctor appointments
