Sleep – Your Best Resource for Senior Care Energy

Senior Care Coronado CA

Senior Care Coronado CAA family caregiver is probably one of the most stress-prone positions to be in, and the number of people who are finding themselves facing such a challenge is growing tremendously. Known as the “sandwich generation”, many caregivers are caught between still raising or supporting their children while at the same time working and now being responsible for the care of an aging loved-one. This triple whammy of responsibility is a perfect storm for chronic stress, exhaustion, burnout and lack of sufficient recovery time.

Stress Can Be Handled With Good Planning, Right?

Chronic stress involves an aggregate of events putting a person under pressure repeatedly, causing big demands on the person mentally and physically. While many people can easily deal with and respond to big stress events individually, having the same pressure applied regularly and even daily can begin to wear a person out. Even the most capable and strong-willed people will find themselves eventually run down and feeling burnt out after a few weeks. However, stress is also easy to ignore; many try to deal with it the wrong way through monetary fixes.  These momentary fixes may seem to work at first, but eventually a person comes back to feeling exhausted and even more so.

Sleep is Gold

The Nation Blood, Heart and Lung Institute  says what a person needs when under lots of demand from work, home care, and children is a good amount of daily sleep every night. This is the time when the mind sorts out its problems freely and the body restores itself. Ideally, one should get at least six hours sleep nightly if not up to eight. Unfortunately, nighttime is when people try to cut corners dealing with problems unresolved from the day, sacrificing sleep to figure out one more issue. It’s a losing situation. A person makes bad decisions when tired, they lose recovery time, and the lack of sleep eventually adds to personal health problems as well.

Defend Your Recovery Time

Family care and family needs will always encroach, but a caregiver needs to defend their own sleep time for personal recovery. It’s a solid cure for the damage caused by stress, and good sleep allows a person to make better decisions in the day about important matters. Delegate duties, delay the unimportant matters, and prioritize what needs to be done within a schedule. Don’t sacrifice your sleep for the sake of family and elder care, or eventually you will need help as well.
