Adopting Healthy Elder Care Habits on National Well-Elderly Day

Elderly Care LaJolla CA

Elderly Care La Jolla CAJust because your parents are getting older does not mean that they are not able to live a healthy, vital, and energetic lifestyle. Even if your elderly parents have some cognitive, physical, or mobility challenges that make it more difficult for them to take care of their daily needs, they can still live independent, involved lives when you make wellness the focus of your elder care plan. On March 16 join with the rest of the aging care community to celebrate National Well-Elderly Day, also known as Wellderly Day.

Well-Elderly Day is all about encouraging aging adults to stay active and focus on wellness in their daily lives. This means rather than planning your elder care solely around managing your elderly parents’ health concerns and challenges, you should take steps to boost their wellness and support an active, happy quality of life.

Use some of these ideas to make wellness the focus of your care this Wellderly Day and beyond:

  • Get walking. Reducing sedentary time is one of the most important things you can do to increase wellness. Walking is a simple way to boost physical activity and you can easily integrate it into a wide variety of your regular routine. If you live close to the post office, take a walk up there to send letters or packages. Shop for produce at a nearby market and make walking there part of the experience. Challenge your aging parents to park as far out in the parking lot as they can. You can even do something as simple as grocery shopping by writing a grocery list that is purposely out of order and following it so you make several laps around the store
  • Get outside. You do not have to be taking an aerobics class or using a weight machine for it to count as exercise. Getting outside and doing work such as mowing the lawn, weeding the garden, or planting flowers is an enjoyable way to work toward the 150 minutes of moderate activity per week recommended for wellness
  • Drink more water. Dehydration is a serious risk to wellness and can contribute to a variety of health issues, including fatigue, muscle pain, and headaches. Increasing water intake for seniors who are not on a liquid restriction diet helps their bodies work better, supports health, and has been shown to reduce calorie consumption. Make simple changes like eating a light, broth-based soup before dinner, keep a reusable water bottle nearby, and taking several sips of water during each commercial while watching television to boost the amount of water consumed daily
  • Reduce stress. Stress is normal, but too much stress or feeling stressed more often than not leads to mental and physical health concerns. Work with your parents and their elder care providers to find ways to ease stress and encourage relaxation. Try yoga, tai chi, breathing exercises, swimming, and meditation to promote calmness of mind. Take time occasionally to focus completely on relaxation, such as drawing your mother a warm bubble bath or listening to favorite classical music with your father
  • Keep things exciting. Having an elder care routine is good for some things, such as keeping up with medication schedules and making sure your aging parents eat when it is best for them, but too much routine can become boring and lead to depression. Keep things exciting with your elderly parents by planning activities and surprises such as outings, games, and projects.
