Senior Care in La Costa CA: Keeping Senior Busy

Actress Jennifer Garner raised a good point when she and her family self-isolated. While she and many others started to stay home, her parents continued doing their thing. Her parents kept going out to run errands and her advice to them was “Stay home, you have to stay home!”

She’s not alone. As people adjust to self-quarantines, some people are not slowing down. Some older adults stick to their usual routine. They see friends, they go shopping, and they keep trying to do social things. How do you get your parents to slow down and stay home?

Explain the Danger

Make sure your parents are aware of how COVID-19 spreads. Show them the real-life cases of people who had the virus and didn’t know because they were asymptomatic. Every person they came into contact with now has the virus and may suffer greatly. They also expose people they’re around to the virus. It spreads quickly and some will not feel sick, so they keep going out.

Once your mom and dad understand how fast it can spread, show them cases of older adults who did not easily recover. Show how it progresses quickly to pneumonia-like symptoms that impact breathing. People who reach that level of severity cannot breathe without the help of ventilators. Make sure your parents know how dangerous it is.

Give Them Other Things to Do

If they have a lot of activities to keep them busy at home, they’re not likely to become bored. Stock them with books, puzzles, games, craft projects, and ingredients for baking. They can order supplies online and wait for the packages to be delivered.

Talk to them about how to safely handle the packages as they arrive. Open them outside, recycle them, wipe the packaging with disinfecting wipes, and wash their hands after.

Create Alternatives for Socialization

Set up your parents with other ways to socialize. Show them how to use online software like Skype to call their grandchildren and other family members. They can socialize from a safe distance. With video technology, they’ll have the chance to have face-to-face talks without risking infection.

Is It Time for Guidance?

Are your parents going out because they’re seeking companionship and socialization? That’s very likely the reason. It’s not that they’re not worried about COVID-19, it’s because they want to have that opportunity to talk to others. Could it be time to have caregivers stopping by to guide your parents each day?

With caregivers stopping by, your parents won’t feel as alone. They’ll have someone to help them with daily tasks and activities. You can get started by calling a home care agency and asking about caregivers in your parents’ town.
