If you are worried about ovarian cancer in your elderly loved one, there are some things you should know. One of the main things you should check is the risk factors for ovarian cancer. The more you know about these risk factors, the more you might be able to help your elderly loved one prevent or watch out for the signs of this type of cancer.

Aging

One of the main risk factors for ovarian cancer is aging. Most of the people who get ovarian cancer are 63 or older.

Obesity

Another one of the risk factors for ovarian cancer is obesity. While there isn’t much research to support this, it has been shown that many of the people who develop this type of cancer also have been overweight or obese. If your elderly loved one is obese, have their home care providers work with them on exercising to lose some weight. This can lower their risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Pregnancy in Late Age

If your elderly loved one had their first baby after they turned 35 years old, they have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer. In addition, if they never were able to carry a baby full-term, this also increases their risk of developing this type of cancer.

Treatments for Fertility

There is some research that backs up the fact that fertility treatments are a cause for ovarian cancer. This research shows that those who have gotten fertility treatments have a higher risk of getting ovarian tumors.

Hormone Replacement Therapy

If your elderly loved one went into menopause and then took hormone replacement therapy for 5 years or more, generally have a higher risk of getting ovarian cancer.

Survivor of Breast Cancer

Does your loved one have a history of breast cancer? Have they gone into remission for breast cancer? If this is the case, your loved one also has an increased risk of getting ovarian cancer.
BRCA2 and/or BRCA1 Carrier

These are the breast cancer genes. While it might not make sense that breast cancer and ovarian cancer are linked, that is how these genes work. If your loved one carries these genes (you may want to get them tested to see if they do), they have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

Family History of Ovarian Cancer

Is there are a family history of ovarian cancer? If there is, then your elderly loved one may have a higher risk of developing this type of cancer, as well. Even if there is a family history of breast cancer, your loved one could have a higher risk of developing ovarian cancer.

These are some of the risk factors that you need to know about in regards to ovarian cancer.
