Helping Your Elderly Loved One to Cope with High Blood Pressure

Elder Care La Jolla CA

Often when an elderly loved one is diagnosed with high blood pressure, the changes to her lifestyle and the new medication can be overwhelming. There are things that you can do to help your loved one to adapt more easily, though, and most of them are pretty easy to implement.

Keep Those Doctor’s Appointments

It’s really important that your loved one keeps all of her doctor’s appointments when she’s got high blood pressure issues. In the beginning, medications and medication amounts may need tweaking in order to get decent results. As your loved one continues to make health changes, additional adjustments may be necessary to keep up with corresponding changes in blood pressure.

Stick to Treatment Plans

Often when your loved one starts to feel better, she may think that she no longer needs her medication. If side effects crop up or there are reasons that your loved one cannot take her medication, then that is something that you need to bring up with her medical team. Your loved one’s doctor may also prescribe a specific diet or exercise program, which can make a huge difference in your loved one’s blood pressure levels. Testing blood pressure at home with a home device can help your loved one to stick with her treatment plan, so ask her doctor about the right device.

Look into Healthier Habits

Anything that you can do to help your loved one to lower her blood pressure is helpful. Exercising, even a little bit, and eating healthier foods are an excellent start. Work with your loved one’s doctor, her home care providers, and other family members to introduce these changes as gradually as possible. Trying to introduce too many changes and new habits at once can make your loved one dig in her heels and refuse to cooperate.

Kick Stress and Anxiety

Stress and anxiety can also contribute to higher blood pressure, so if you can help your loved one to reduce both, that can be helpful. Exercise can help with stress and anxiety, as can meditation. Try to help your loved one to figure out what is causing stressful, anxious thoughts so you can help her to eliminate them.

As your loved one gains more experience with managing her high blood pressure, it will be easier to deal with.
