Elder Care in Coronado CA
Here are a few other ways the senior can continue living by themselves.
- Take care of their health. The first step in maintaining their independence is to take care of their health. This means getting regular doctor checkups, eating a healthy diet, and exercising with their doctor’s approval. Also, getting between 7 and 9 hours of sleep each night is essential for their mental alertness and physical health.
- Check out local resources. Most communities have resources available for elderly adults that will make living at home easy. If going to the grocery store is challenging for them, they could do their grocery shopping online and have it delivered directly to their door. There are a number of other resources that should be available, it just takes a little research to find them.
- Safety-proof the home. There are plenty of dangers in atypical home that we may not think about until we have an aging parent living at home. Falling is a major concern for seniors because it could lead to injuries that may require hospitalizations. Make sure the lighting is bright throughout the home, railings are sturdy, there are no loose carpets, and there is no clutter in hall ways or rooms. Slip-resistant mats and grab bars in the bathroom will also help prevent slipping.
- Get a medical alert system. If the elder does get injured in their home, a medical alert system will allow them to get help by the push of a button. The device is placed around their neck or is clipped on their clothing and will alert a team of emergency professionals if the senior needs help. It is the perfect solution for seniors who live alone.
- Check in on them. Set up a time to call or stop by their home at the same time each day or week. Not only will you be able to make sure they are doing well, but your loved one will probably look forward to your call or visit. If you are unable to do it, ask other family members, friends, or neighbors to stop by.
