Duties and Responsibilities of the Caregivers San Diego Area Families Trust:

Personal Hygiene:

  • Assist patient with personal care and activities of daily living, safety supervision
  • Bathing, shaving, hair care, and routine skin care
  • Oral hygiene including denture care 
  • Dressing and undressing
  • Prevention of pressure ulcers
  • Apply non-sterile, dry dressings to intact skin surfaces
  • Empty or change Foley catheter bag
  • Empty or change Colostomy bag 
  • Care of hearing aides, glasses, and prosthetic devices
  • Nail care (filing ok, but no cutting nails)

Medical Care:

  • Obtain and record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations
  • Remind or assist with pre-poured medications
  • Chart the medical record

Housekeeping:

  • Light housekeeping, maintain a clean and healthy environment

Safety:

  • Home safety, emergency preparedness, CPR and Heimlich maneuver

Transportation:

  •  May drive/escort on errands, shopping, doctor appointments

Mobility:

  •  Assistance with mobility: ambulation, transfers, positioning, and prescribed range of motion exercises

Nutrition:

  •  Meal planning, preparation, serving, and feeding
  •  Measure and record “intake” and “output”
