In-Home Care in San Diego CA: Yoga Exercises

When you think about yoga, you may imagine young, trendy folks twisting themselves into pretzel-like contortions. But that’s on the extreme end of the spectrum. Yoga is a fantastic low-impact approach for individuals of all ages to maintain a healthy lifestyle. This is a perfect exercise for your elderly loved ones and their in-home care providers to enjoy.

If your senior mom or dad needs help getting from place to place like a yoga class it’s time to consider in-home care to help them. Many seniors wish to age in place but as they get older it can be hard to remain as independent as they once were. This is when in-home care providers can come in real handy especially when your older parent starts to want to do more outside of the house.

Yoga is the perfect spring and summer activity to start trying out. Yoga is one of the most adaptable forms of exercise. It may be done almost anywhere, requires no special equipment, and most positions can be adapted to fit arthritis or reduced mobility.

Seniors may enjoy a variety of health advantages, including enhanced joint health and mobility, lower blood pressure, greater lung function, better mental health, and better sleep. Yoga is also an excellent match with our aim to assist seniors in thriving in mind, body, and spirit. If you want to recommend some yoga poses for seniors, start with these.

Legs on the Wall

If you haven’t been active in a while, this position will allow you to gently release tension while increasing the flexibility of your lower back and legs. This is good for seniors who can find a comfortable position on the couch or bed or floor.

  • Position yourself perpendicular to a wall.
  • Walk your legs up the wall until your backs are against the wall.
  • Your arms should be at your sides, relaxed.
  • Breathe deeply while you stretch.
  • Slowly lower your legs from the wall.

This is a good starting position for seniors to try if they seem like they may be interested in yoga. It is a position they can do from the comfort of their homes without needing to go out. One of the best things about yoga is that if a senior cannot find a class this is something that they can do from home with a YouTube video.

Tree Pose for Beginners

Try this standing stance to improve your balance. When necessary, you may grip onto anything sturdy for support. This is a pose that is actually good for all ages, helping anyone find the balance they need. The more you do it the better you’ll become.

First, stand with your legs together and arms held high over your head, and then press palms firmly together.
Bend one knee slowly and hold it off the ground. Try to remain as balanced as possible. Some seniors may need to grab on to something to help keep them balanced.
Place the foot of the lifted leg on the calf of the standing leg. Hold for a few moments. The switch legs.

These two yoga poses will greatly help seniors practice balance and ease body stress but that’s just the beginning. When they start going to senior yoga classes they will find a wide variety of poses they can do at home.
