Senior Care in Coronado CA Hearing loss is a common problem among older adults, but does not have to be. While it is impossible to completely prevent seniors from suffering from hearing loss, there are ways to save their ability to hear for a much longer period of time.

This health problem usually occurs slowly and is very difficult to notice until the senior severely loses their hearing. With the assistance of a home care provider, there are several ways to lessen your loved one’s chances of suffering from this health problem.

How to Prevent Hearing Loss

In order to keep the elder from being the victim of a hearing impairment, it is important to make these changes to the amount of noise in your loved one’s environment.

  • Stay away from excessive noise. Whether attending a loud concert or cranking the volume up on the television, keeping the noise level low will save their hearing. If the senior is going to be at an event with loud noise levels, the elder should wear hearing protectors, such as earmuffs.
  • Control the noise if possible. Keep the noise levels of the television and radio low to prevent hearing loss from happening. This rule also extends to car radios and other listening devices.
  • Avoid smoking. Surprisingly, smoking and hearing loss go hand-in-hand. The best way to prevent this from happening is to quit smoking altogether.
  • Do not stick cotton swabs too far in the ear. When cleaning their ears, seniors should avoid sticking cotton swabs and other items too far into their ears. Even if they are trying to clean their ears, sticking these items in the ear can cause irreversible damage to the eardrum.
  • Manage other health conditions. By not taking the steps to properly manage certain health problems, the risk of hearing loss will become much greater. Some chronic conditions that could cause hearing loss are diabetes and poor circulation.

Symptoms of Hearing Loss

If you suspect that your elderly parent is suffering from a hearing impairment, there are several symptoms to watch for. These include:

  • Difficulty hearing in noisy locations
  • Some sounds seem too noisy
  • Ringing in the ears
  • The senior begins turning up the volume on the television or radio to loud volumes
  • Constantly asking others to repeat what they said
  • Unable to understand phone conversations
  • The “s” and “th” sounds become difficult to hear

Fortunately, there are a wide range of hearing devices available to give your loved one back the hearing they had lost. Encourage them to discuss these options with their doctor.
