Senior Care for Elderly Adults with Compromised Immune Systems

Senior Care La Jolla CA

Senior Care La Jolla CA Elderly adults tend to have weaker immune systems than younger adults, which puts them at greater risk of infection and illness, and makes it more difficult for them to actually recover from these issues if they do arise. For some seniors, however, this weaker immune system is severe to the point that it is considered compromised. This can happen due to a variety of conditions and illnesses, including cancer, HIV/AIDS, and various different medical treatments. Finding ways to modify your senior care plan to accommodate this compromised immune system is critical to protect your elderly loved ones and ensure they stay healthy and strong.

Use these tips, and share them with your aging loved ones’ caregiver, to help your parents cope with a compromised immune system so they stay healthy and can continue to enjoy a happy, healthy, active quality of life throughout their aging years:

  • Monitor their diet. Diet is the foundation for health and wellbeing. Talk to your parents’ doctor about their dietary needs and make sure that you get them the nutrients that they need on a regular basis. This means emphasizing whole foods with all of the nutrients that their bodies need and limiting foods that can be difficult for the body to process or that keeps them from eating these healthy foods, such as fried, fatty, or overly processed foods.
  • Never ignore symptoms. What seem like minor symptoms to healthier adults can quickly worsen to a severe situation for elderly adults with compromised immune systems. Never ignore symptoms in your aging loved ones such as sniffles, headache, fever, chills, cough, sore throat, or listlessness. As soon as your parents mention that they are not feeling well, or you notice them react to a symptom, such as rubbing their nose or speaking in a quieter tone, get in touch with their physician to schedule a thorough examination so that they can get the treatment they need as soon as possible.
  • Do not self-treat. Even if you think your seniors have a condition or illness that they have had many times before, such as a cold, sinus infection, or other virus, do not attempt to self-diagnose or self-treat. They may be coping with more than just the condition you expect, or could have a different condition all together, so it is important that they get proper diagnosis and course of treatment. Never allow your seniors to take any type of prescription medication that is not for a specific condition or that belongs to another person, even if you are positive that they will receive a prescription for the same medication.
  • Practice germ control. Germ control is absolutely vital for seniors with compromised immune systems. Make sure that your parents wash their hands frequently, with each session lasting at least 15 seconds. Use antibacterial gel in between washings to continue warding off germs. Do not allow anyone who is ill, has recently been ill, or has an active infection get near your seniors.
