Matt had been living alone for more than five years before he began to notice his strength seriously declining. There were a couple of times when he was walking down the stairs that he felt as though he was going to tumble down the rest of them. It was as though something were giving out in his legs.

He went to his doctor and had a barrage of tests, and the best that his doctor could determine was that his strength was waning as a natural course of aging. At 83 years of age, his doctor told him that he was going to be facing challenges like this in the coming years. His doctor also recommended that he look into senior care at home.

He went home and felt a bit despondent, but decided to talk to his adult daughter and son about his visit. They both immediately supported the idea of senior home care services. He wasn’t too keen on the idea of having somebody come into his home to assist him, especially since he could take care of himself for the most part. “I’m only struggling once in a blue moon,” he kept telling his children.

The more he talked to his adult children about senior care, the less he thought they were listening to him.  It was a bit frustrating to be voicing his opinions and to feel as though he was invisible. At one point, his daughter mentioned that she had contacted a home care agency in the area and they had a senior care provider who sounded as though he would be ideal for the situation.

It took Matt to almost shout to get them to listen. They were so focused on what they wanted that they weren’t listening to what he wanted. Even though his doctor had recommended that he consider hiring some type a senior care services, Matt wasn’t ready for that just yet. He knew that it was a practical decision that he should make, but he wanted people to respect his own opinions. Maybe if his children hadn’t taken over the decision-making process like they did, he would have gone along with hiring a senior care provider sooner than he did.

For those who require senior care, it may feel like an uphill battle to get your voice heard among the noise of their family talking about hiring a caregiver for them. Like Matt, sometimes you just have to speak a little louder to make sure people listen to you. For family members, make sure that you step back and allow your loved one’s voice to be heard with regard to this important senior care decision.
