When you’re a caregiver, you’re the one who is there for your aging adult when she’s not feeling well. But what happens when you’re the one that’s not feeling so well?

Who Can You Call?

If you’re lucky enough to have family members in the area who are willing and able to pitch in, you might have an ideal situation for backup. Even though you have lots of family members around, that doesn’t mean they’ll be able to help when you need them the most. This is where working with senior care providers you trust can really come in handy. It’s especially helpful if your elderly family member already knows the backup home care providers.

Keep a List or Notebook for Anyone Who Fills In

Chances are pretty solid that your elderly family member has more than just a few health conditions or other situations that require some special handling and information. Putting together a list of everything someone might need to know sounds like a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. Break the project up over time and just keep plugging away.

Make Sure Emergency Numbers Are Available

The very first list that you need to make for your backup people is a list of important numbers. These need to be any numbers of people who help your elderly family member or who handle medical issues for her. So any medical personnel, her pharmacist, and any therapists that work with her would be on the list. It’s also a good idea to include phone numbers for other family members, just in case.

Focus on Getting Better

When you do run into an occasion where you need to use your backup plan, don’t try to force yourself to keep going. It’s time for you to rest and get better so that you can get back to caregiving as soon as you’re able to do so. Trying to rush your healing process or doing too much can make it difficult for you to continue to be a caregiver at all. You have to take care of yourself and be gentle with yourself as you take the time you need in order to heal.

Having a plan means that even when an illness sneaks up on you or a health issue flares up, you’re still not thrown for a loop. Remember to update all of the information that you leave for the people who take over for you as often as necessary so that they’ve got accurate notes.
