Getting more done every day is the dream of just about every caregiver. You’re going to have to put some practical steps in motion if that’s the reality that you want to embrace. It’s also going to take a little bit of time for you to become comfortable with handing over tasks you’ve felt were yours alone.

Get Honest about Your Schedule

There are likely some things in your schedule that you would hand over to someone else if you could. So what, in your schedule is caregiving and what is other activities, like work? One answer is to write down what you do every day for several days in a row. That way you can look back over your notes and see where you were supposed to spend your time and where you actually spent it.

What Are You Responsible to Do?

There are some responsibilities that are likely all yours alone. Those might be tasks related to your job or to caring for your children if you have any. You might also lump in most, if not all, of your duties as a caregiver. For now, simply list out all of the different tasks and responsibilities that you end up managing. This is going to be a pretty big list.

Decide What You Have to Do Yourself

Now that you have your master list, what do you really have to do yourself? These are going to be the tasks that only you can do. Some of these are going to be showering, taking care of your own health, and possibly some of your own job responsibilities. Be honest with yourself and only mark things that are your responsibility if truly no one else can do them.

Delegate Anything that You Can Delegate

The good news is that all other things that someone else could conceivably handle is something that you can delegate to someone else. You might not feel comfortable with that idea right away, especially if you’ve never delegated tasks before. Pick one task to match up with someone who can handle it for you and then let it go. This process will get easier.

Being a caregiver means that you’re the one in charge, but it doesn’t have to mean that you personally do everything yourself. It’s a good idea to learn what you can delegate and to whom. Keep delegating, even if you’re not sure it’s the right answer for you at first.
