Elderly Care in Coronado CA Keeping your elderly loved one safe should be one of your most important priorities as you move through your care journey with them. While you do not want to think about your parent being vulnerable to a crime, acknowledging their risks and taking steps to minimize those risks can help to protect your parent and keep them safer and healthier throughout their later years. While it is important for your parent to maintain their security when they are in their home, they are also vulnerable when they are outside of their home. Whether they are merely out taking a walk or are running errands, it is vital that they follow security and safety tips to keep them as protected as possible.

Use these tips to help keep your aging parent safe and protected from crime when they are away from home:

  • Ensure they have proper lighting. If your aging parent is going to be out of the house when it is dark, make sure that they have a flashlight with them that will provide ample lighting for them. This will help then if they should get stranded in their car, as they are walking through parking lots, and even as they are trying to get in the door to the house.
  • Hold their purse properly. A purse that is slung over the shoulder is vulnerable to being grabbed and yanked off. Your parent can reduce this chance by using a cross-body bag that keeps it stretched across the chest and on the hip. This is much more difficult to remove. If they are moving through a crowd, they should move the purse to being in front of their body so that it is even more protected.
  • Avoid being on the phone. Talking on the phone makes you more vulnerable. If your parent is out walking in the evening, is shopping, or is walking through a parking lot alone, they should not be on their phone. This makes it more difficult for them to pay attention to what is happening around them and can make them more vulnerable to dangers.
  • Store items in trunk. Especially with the holiday season just a couple of months away, your parent might have started thinking of shopping. When they head out, encourage them to always store their purchases in their trunk. Likewise, if they plan on leaving their purse or wallet in the car while they go inside somewhere, they should put it in the trunk rather than leaving it in the body of the car. This makes it less visible and less appealing to potential criminals.

If you are concerned about your aging parent’s safety while they are home alone or if they embark on errands and other activities without you, starting elderly care for them can help to relieve this concern. Knowing that an elderly home care services provider is in the home with your aging parent or out with them can give you peace of mind that they are safer, more secure, and better capable of monitoring the area around them so that they can stay safer and more secure. This means that your parent can enjoy a more active, engaged, and independent quality of life while also feeling confident in their security.
