Don’t feel Discouraged, Incontinence Can Be Treated!

Senior Care La Jolla CA: Find Out The Reasons for Incontinence, and How to Treat It

Senior Care La Jolla CA One of the more common problems faced by older people is something called urinary incontinence. Simply, urinary incontinence is the accidental leakage of urine from the bladder. It can be as mild as a slight wetting of underwear, or as severe as having to stay close to a bathroom in case of an emergency.

There are many reasons why urinary incontinence happens. Infections of the urinary tract, problems with the reproductive system, a growth or cancer, or even certain medicines can cause older adults to become uncomfortable about their ability to go to the bathroom regularly.

Some other issues could be:

  • Little control over the bladder
  • Miscues or problems using the bladder muscle
  • Nerve damage to the area around the bladder because of disease or illness
  • Problems with the prostate
  • Illness or a disease that makes mobility difficult, therefore making it hard to make it to the bathroom in a timely manner

When we go the bathroom, there is a complicated function of tightening and relaxing occurring in and around the region of the bladder. This complicated movement helps push urine out of the body if done correctly. For suffers of urinary incontinence, this process no longer happens normally.

There are several types of urinary incontinence, all of which can be diagnosed by a doctor with either a simple urine, blood, or bladder test. Some of the types of incontinence include:

  • Pressure from coughing, lifting something heavy, or exercise puts pressure on the bladder, causing stress incontinence
  • Diseases like Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes cause urge incontinence, when people have the sudden urge to go the bathroom and may not have the stamina necessary to make it to a toilet in time
  • Injuries to the back or spinal cord can cause overflow incontinence, when small amounts of urine are released from the bladder with little to no control
  • Functional incontinence means that older adults with simple mobility issues have a hard time making it to the bathroom.

Many of these types of incontinence are the result of other illnesses, disease, and health risks that should be addressed by a doctor. Don’t let something like incontinence ruin your parent’s social life. It’s so important for elderly people to stay connected with others. Unfortunately incontinence is one of the main reasons they stay at home and stop going out to socialize. It’s a medical problem that can be easily cured or treated with a doctor’s help.

Make sure your senior loved one has lots of opportunities to socialize. A caregiver from a senior home service can help with this. Not only do they provide companionship, they can also accompany your parent to activities for seniors or family get-togethers. A caregiver is great for your parent to have help on a daily basis for personal care and home care tasks as well.
