Active Aging Week is a week-long advocacy campaign to celebrate an older adult’s ability to age in place in an active, engaging way. Your dad always wanted to stay in his home for the reason of his life. So, take this week to discuss the best ways to support him with his aging plans.
Talk to Him About His Goals
What are your dad’s goals as he ages? Has he always wanted to live in his current home, or did he plan to downsize once his mobility or health is affected? Would he want his children to provide the help he needs, or is he more comfortable knowing he has professional home care aides?
How Active Is He?
Ask your dad how active he is each day. Does he go for walks around his yard or neighborhood? Does he have and use exercise equipment like a treadmill, stationary bike, or elliptical machine?
If he’s not active, then what does he need to increase his activity? Does he hate walking alone and want someone to walk with him? Would he rather sign up for a fitness class at a local gym, where he can work under a trainer’s supervision?
Ask Him How He Would Rearrange His Home
Go through your dad’s home and check that it’s free of the common issues that lead to falls. Check that his stair rails both inside and outside the home are secured to studs or posts, not the sheetrock. Likewise, check for loose carpeting, floor tiles, and uneven wood planks.
Move furniture out of the way of the main walking areas. If there is a coffee table between your dad’s favorite seat and the phone, adjust things so that he has a clear path. Also, look for other common paths, from a seat or bed to a toilet, shower, or kitchen.
Get Him Caught Up on Medical and Dental Appointments
Is your dad overdue for any of his medical or dental appointments? If so, to catch him up, get appointments scheduled now. Is he due for a flu vaccine or COVID booster? Schedule them as soon as possible.
You need to make sure he keeps those appointments. But he might not be able to drive himself. Verify that you or another family member is free to drive him there, walk him into the office, and drive him back.
Is He Socially Active?
Does your dad have an active social life? Does he have friends he regularly visits? Would it help him have companion care services?
