Senior Care in La Jolla CA If given the choice, older adults would prefer to live at home. They will be able to stay in an environment that is very familiar with them that allows the elder to surround themselves with their belongings. But seniors do not have the health and strength they did in their younger days, putting themselves at risk by living alone. Hiring a senior care provider will give your loved one someone to talk to, while also supervising them throughout the day in order to keep them safe. To make living at home safer for your loved one, here are some precautions to take.

  1. Meet the neighbors. There may be a situation in which your aging loved one needs help. Knowing the neighbors will give them someone to ask when assistance is needed. Take a moment to meet the senior’s neighbors and ask if they would be willing to help in case of emergency. If they hear a noise coming from the elder’s home, the neighbors could stop by and check on them. Having people look after your loved one from next door will help keep them safe while being at home alone.
  2. Install motion sensor lights. Even the safest neighborhoods may have intruders trying to break into nearby homes. To trick the intruder, motion sensor lights will turn the lights on outside as soon as someone walks by. This should be enough to scare the intruder off.
  3. Get a pet. Having a pet will increase the senior’s mood, prevent feelings of depression and isolation, and give them a loving companion. Pets, especially dogs, will also scare of unwelcome visitors who are trying to break in with their bark.
  4. Have a list of emergency contacts. If an emergency does occur, the senior will need to contact someone for help. Place a list of emergency contacts and their phone numbers near the phone. If they have a cell phone, set up these people as speed dials in order to make it easier for your loved one to call when needed.
  5. Invite someone over. Whether the senior is waiting for the plumber or an electrician to show up, having another family member or neighbor with the them will ensure that they stay safe while these strangers are in their home.
  6. Hide the keys. Hiding a key under the doormat, fake rock, or flower pot will most likely be the first places intruders will look to get access to their home. Instead, give extra sets of keys to people your aging parent trusts, such as a friend or caregiver. When the keys are needed, your loved one can call and have them stop by and help.

Living alone can be extremely dangerous for all seniors. Try these precautions to make your loved one’s home a safer and more secure place for him to reside.
