4 Signs the Senior Who Requires Care is an Unsafe Driver

Hiring a Caregiver in Pacific Beach, CA Can Help Your Aging Loved One Get Where They Need to Be Safely!

Caregivers Pacific Beach CA When you get behind the wheel and drive around town, you probably see plenty of drivers who appear to be distracted. It can certainly be frustrating and it can frighten even the most confident drivers on the road. When you’re talking about any senior who requires some type of care at home, if they continue to drive, they may be putting themselves and others at risk without knowing it.

April is Distracted Driving Month and there are many things that can provide distractions for drivers aside from answering a cell phone, texting, or other things.

Just because the senior still has his or her driver’s license doesn’t mean they should be continuing to drive themselves. The major problem is that driving in the United States is considered one of the first signs of true independence for teenagers and young adults. The prospect of giving up a driver’s license for somebody who has been driving for the better part of their entire life can seem like a loss of independence. We’ll talk about that after these four signs that a senior may be unsafe on the roads.

  1. Having a minor fender bender. If the senior recently had a minor fender bender, it doesn’t matter where it occurred if it was their fault. Often, people don’t report these to the police or their insurance company. Find out if there has been any recent mishap on the part of the senior when driving.
  2. Drifting. When somebody drifts from their lane it could be the result of a lack of focus, being distracted, or not seeing the lines clearly enough. Drifting lanes may occur more frequently when it gets dark out.
  3. Not remembering how they got there. This happens to a lot of people in today’s society. The driver may leave home and then reach their destination but not have any real recollection of the trip itself. That’s because their mind was on other things. Just because they are looking ahead, coming to stops, making turns, and doing all of the other driving things doesn’t mean they weren’t distracted.
  4. Swerving often. If somebody has a tendency to swerve to avoid potholes at the last moment, a garbage can that blew out into the road, or oncoming traffic, it may be the result of not seeing clearly enough. Being able to see and spot potential hazards down the road is important to safe driving.

When it comes to proper senior care, hiring an experienced caregiver may also provide transportation services to the elderly client. Check with the home care agency to see if transportation services are a part of the job for any particular caregiver hired. If it is, this can be an easier way to encourage the senior to give up their license to drive and remain safer on the roads.
